Welcome to Wreck Dive

alderman

New Zealand doesnt have the glamorous wrecks of Spanish Galleons or Treasure fleets. It does have over 15,000 kms of coastline, and hundereds of bays which are home to a list of over 2300 wrecks, a list that is continuing to grow. Some have been pounded and ground into small pieces and are no longer recognisable for what they once were. Others have held up well and are popular sites with dive clubs and charter boats.

I have built this site for people that have or have access to a Fast Fizz boat, Yacht or Live-a-board and want to get in a bit of wreck diving.  There is nothing more frustrating than getting out to a dive site and blowing most of a tank trying to find a shipwreck.

Some of the sites I have listed here are not divable and are listed here because, the weather maybe too rough to dive or if you have time to kill and want a small  sidetrack or walk while in the area you have an idea where things are.

The positions are recorded using WGS 84 chart co-ordinates. It must be remembered that any positions provided will put you close to the wreck but a fish finder will be your best friend while onsite. Because of the amount of typing involved mistakes in positions and general information may be made. I will change and update all mistakes as soon as they are brought to my attention, if you notice a typo in any co-ordinates please let me know.

It would be irresponsible of me to just put out positions and not warn people that some of these dive sites are, DEEP DIVES, beyond the depth of normal scuba limitations.  Sooo you HAVE been warned! Wreckdive.co.nz, and the Owners cannot be held responsible for any accidents or injuries to individuals acting on information found on this website.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out with photos and information.  BIG THANKS to Mike Fraser, Pete Mesley & Ian J Farquhar, all photos labeled "I.J.F" are from Ian's collection.  Thanks to Gavin Mc Lean @ Ministry of Culture & Heritage, I'm amazed the amount of info you are able to give me off the top of your head!

Information on a vessel's history is taken from New Zealand Shipwrecks by CWN Ingram and expanded on when I have done research on the vessel and as other info comes to me from divers and other people. If you have any questions or information that can be added to a wreck site please email me. Any info or pictures will be credited to who ever provides the information.
